RUGBY AND THE RAINBOW NATION

Although the wave of national pride shared by South Africans of all colours as they greeted their rugby team on its return from winning the world cup in France, the issue of race in sport, as in other aspects of life in post-apartheid South Africa, is sure to continue.
President Thabo Mbeki made it clear that he shared the rainbow nation's joy, even though only two of the team's players were non-white, both of them being Coloured, as mixed-race South Africans are known. Mr Mbeki even called for the coach, Jake White, to stay on, though reports have buzzed around that he may look for a job elsewhere when his contract expires; he is said to be fed up with political interference. Voices in the ruling African National Congress have called for a more transformative approach to team selection: that means more non-whites should be picked.
Along with cricket, rugby remains a favourite sport of most white South Africans, whereas most of their black fellow citizen prefers football. Rugby is still particularly popular among Afrikaners, white South Africans of mainly Dutch descent who were the bastion of support for the ideology of segregation and racial domination; of the 32 players in the victorious world cup squad, not just those that actually played in the final game, only four were whites of English-speaking stock, five were Coloured and just one was a black African.
Nelson Mandela's gracious support for the Springboks, as the national team is known, when they last won the cup, on home soil, in 1995, softened the hearts of white South Africa, even of the most diehard white racists. But a feeling still lingers that rugby has yet to shed its image as a mainly white sport that long symbolised apartheid at its macho worst.
Pressure on the sport's governing body and coaches to ensure that the sport better mirrors the country's racial make-up is intense. South Africa's 48 million people, about 38 million are black, 4 million plus are white, almost as many are Coloured and about 600,000 are of Asian descent. Set racial quotas in professional rugby at the top level were dropped in 2004.

THE INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality recently graced Port Elizabeth residents with a Jazz Festival that left Port Elizabeth residents craving for more of the show. The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality clearly prepared for the show in advance because the security was very tight in all angles, some roads were closed because of this event, and this was for traffic purposes.

This all started on Friday the 13th of May at the Vuyisile mini square which is also known as the market square. On Friday it was just an opening show and it was a free show, it started at 17h00 and ended at 23h00. The main concert was on Saturday the 14th of May at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium where the tickets to enter was R40.00-R400.00. There were many artists who were rocking there, amongst those artists there was also the talented Bra Hugh Masekela, Goldfish and Belinda Adams.

On Saturday the doors were opened at 14h00 and the show started at 14h30. Indeed it was a main event because it included artists like freshly ground, Huge Masekela, Prime Circle, Geoge Benson, Jamali and Loyiso Bhala who was an important guest. People came from all over the Eastern Cape and the Western Cape to witness this big event that was held by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. “It was a very exciting and it was one of the best shows I have ever seen, not to mention the vibe and the hospitality of the Nelson Mandela Bay”, said Velem Spark, who came for the festival from Westen Cape. This viewer says he came all the way from Cape Town to witness this festival, especially to watch his favourite jazz legend in South African Music Bra-Hugh Masekela.

The performances from these superstars were of cause not disappointing. “They delivered exactly what I was expecting and the audiences enjoyed themselves”, said Anga Mnge, a Student from NMMU, who was truly excited about the whole show.

LEARNERS ARE BEING ASSAULTED AT SCHOOLS

CORPORAL punishment has become a serious issue in schools, especially in rural areas and black disadvantaged schools. Teachers feel the need to use corporal punishment on learners who misbehave and those who do not make their home works. The question is that should corporal punishment be used at schools knowing that it has been burned long time ago.
The department of education’s code of conduct is turning to be blind on issues that lead teachers on spanking learners. The learners nowadays are ill-disciplined and the law favours learners over their educators. If a learner does not do his/her school work which result to failure, the teacher get blamed for not doing his/her job properly. School kids do whatever they feel in school premises that are against the school’s code of conduct, so teachers try to enforce discipline by applying corporal punishment.
The learners quickly jump on accusing teachers, saying they are being abused and they call the officials to take this issue on their hands. Do teachers have the right to corporal punishment? This is the question that everyone is asking around. The Herald has recently reported about a 14-year-old pupil that was badly beaten by his teacher at St Josephs junior secondary schools in Mthatha.  Zandile Mbabela, a journalist from The Herald reported that this young boy received five strong lashes on the left hand with a pipe by a female teacher. Doctors reported that this young boy could not walk again because his condition has become worse to the point of almost total paralysis and the loss of feeling in his legs.
Department of education discovered that some teachers relieve their stress by beating learners. The department of education burned corporal punishment long time ago. The department gave some alternative measures of corporal punishment such as detention and community service, like working in the school garden and other work at school, not spanking a child. The provincial superintendent of the Eastern Cape, Modidima Manya Said, “We are taking a zero-tolerance approach to corporal punishment and any assault on a pupil by a teacher. We cannot keep spending government money defending teachers who act against government policy. If they cannot comply with the rules, they should not be in the government’s employ.”
Corporal punishment makes children fear school, they not even participate in class and their class marks decreases. It also makes dropouts at schools. Children are not motivated to go to school, and as a result there are a lot of street kids starving in rubbish bins because of fearing school.

‘WHO TO VOTE FOR’

The South African municipal election for the year 2011 has come again. All political parties are busy impressing people all over South Africa. Political parties are campaigning trying to convince people to follow and vote for their parties. The whole country is painted by posters of different political parties.

Only two weeks left for South African citizens to vote for their local municipalities, each South African political party is running up and down trying to get all the votes on the day of elections. What is shocking about these coming municipal elections is that there are only two parties who seem to be contesting for the votes. Democratic Alliance (DA) and African National Congress (ANC) are the most political parties that the media is busy talking about as if they are the only political parties that need the votes.

Political parties are promising people that they will meet their needs and they will deliver every service they need, but a lot of people are fed up with the propaganda of political parties. People are claiming that the government only consider them when they need votes. A lot of rural areas and informal settlements in South Africa are still struggling to get services, people are living their lives in shacks and they are still using bucket system because the government does not provide them with better sanitation and houses. The government does provide people with basic needs. People are forced to vote, but they have nothing to appreciate from the government because they do not see any difference from their previous votes.

Some people say they will no longer take part on South African elections. Others alleged that they will not vote on these upcoming elections because their votes do not make any difference in their lives. Others says they are really confused and they do not know who exactly they can vote for because they trusted the ruling party but it is not doing as it promised, it does not deliver, the only thing that is doing is to increase the inflation and it does not provide jobs.

Each political party is criticising another party and they accusing each other for using the state’s money for their own benefits. There is an ANC candidate that have two posters with two different surnames at KwaMhlanga in Mpumalanga and people know a totally different surname that does not even appear on those two posters, so people are willing to vote for this man but they need his explanation before they can vote for him, they say they cannot vote for someone that they do not know. People are confused, they are asking around whom to vote for and what differences will that person make in their lives.

On the other hand, students are protesting in their institutions, claiming for free education and other students do not even stay on campuses because of lack of residences.

PEOPLE AND NATURE!!

Nature is no longer appreciated; people are making their lives better without considering that they are exploiting nature. People are destroying every natural thing trying to get into the modern life styles.

The nature is so important, but a lot of people do not take nature as their source of life, they do not know that nature is something has to be kept and treated in a good manner just like human beings. Everyone is depended on certain natural things to survive and grow older. People all over the world are destroying nature in many ways, they destroy forests, grassy fields where animals eat, and they even do overfishing. Animals do not have places to stay and they have no places to hide themselves because people are hunting them up and down. People are burning animal locations and cause air pollution that kills a lot of animals and human beings.

Pollution is one major thing that people do most, people are polluting all over the place as a result they do not have healthy lives because they do not have clean water and they fall sick every day. People do not have places to plant vegetables so they eat unhealthy food and they also drink unhealthy water that they share with dirty animals like pigs. People throw died animals in the fields and those animals get flooded into the rivers when rain comes.

People are not aware that deforestation can lead to natural disasters that may be dangerous to them. Deforestation does not allow the soil to get balanced so the soil can easily move and break and cause soil erosion. Earthquake is a result of deforestation. Soil breathes and once the soil gets exploited and is not given space to relax and breathe it get cracks that leads to disasters. Nature is very sensitive and does not want to be exploited; these natural disasters that are happening all over the world are a result of not treating well and appreciating nature.

People must try to appreciate and treat nature equally to them and they should also give it its space so that they cannot be the victims of Global warming and other dangerous disasters.

THE 2010 SOCCER FIFA WORLD CUP IS GONE!

Hosting the 2010 Soccer FIFA World cup has been the breaking news to South African citizens; every citizen was crazy about the 2010 FIFA World Cup hoping that it will change their lives.
The government promised that during the tournament and after the tournament there will be a lot of change in South African economy. People were promised to get jobs during the tournament, some few people got jobs but those were short term jobs. The government employed people to prepare for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, but those employees were just Special Casuals for that tournament and they had contracts. After the entire tournament was finished everybody who was busy working to make the 2010 FIFA World Cup a successful one was dismissed because the contracts were over.
Most people took this tournament as if after it had gone people will be left millionaires, many people budgeted for this event, while other citizens wasted lot of money. There were people who prepared to make money on this tournament by selling vital products that are suitable for this event, but not all of them were successful on their plans because there were certain things that should be required in order for someone to sell. Only those people who met those requirements were allowed to sell in the Stadiums, most of those people that were allowed were people coming from other African countries and other developed countries.
Most South African citizens put their Fruit Stands only in the Public Viewing Areas (PVA’s) where they did not need to meet any requirement, but even there they sold less because there were Tuck shops that were prepared for each PVA. Only those big companies benefited on 2010 FIFA World Cup, but not those who were already in poverty. It is said that most people who were working on this tournament were volunteers, they never get paid and others were promised to be paid.
Most people thought that 2010 FIFA World Cup will bring money to South Africa and it will change many people’s lives. There are those people who are situated in rural areas who never even knew what is happening in the World because they do not have any facilities to access the media due to the lack of service delivery from the government. There are places that do not even have electricity even after the 2010 FIFA World Cup. People that were staying in Informal settlements with no jobs, no basic needs and other resources are still in Poverty, there is no change at all.

POOR MATRIC RESULTS IN RURAL AREAS

Matric results in South Africa are very poor. South African students are trying by all means to do their best in their studies, but in some schools there no resources, if they are present there are no qualified people to teach students.
South African rural areas are most affected by poor matric results because they do not have access to get good materials such as, computers with internet, news papers for them to practise and see the style of how the papers are being set. Students in rural areas are not motivated because of illiteracy of their parents. On the other hand in townships and in suburbs areas learners are very good in their studies because they have laboratories and they conduct some experiments in their classes and they have libraries in their schools, unlike rural students who do not have any facilities.
Family disorganisation is one the main causes of poor matric results because it weakens and ends the ties that bind the members of the family as a group that causes conflict and carelessness in a family. In family disorganisation members do not function as a close-knit unit, and therefore they do not adequately meet each other’s needs. In most cases parents that have students going in suburbs schools are the one who are literate, those parents that function socially and acknowledged manner.
Poverty is another thing that causes poor results in matrics because a learner cannot study with an empty stomach. In rural areas there are no job opportunities so students are the one who are the bread winners in their homes; you will find that in rural schools students are selling sweets and fruit inside the premises and they cannot concentrate on their studies. The only thing that they focus on is selling, in other words other students see school as a place to make a living by selling stuff.
Teenage pregnancy in rural schools is so high as a result students drop out of school because the government does not allow pregnant students in class. Some students are influenced by peers to indulge in sex because everyone does it.
Crime is the result of poor matric results because once a student fails grade 12 thinks that it is the end of the world, so there is nothing to improve on; the only thing that must be done is crime.

WHAT IS SO INTERESTING ABOUT LADIES?

Is it really true that beauty can buy someone happiness? It certainly cannot, but some ladies out there seem to know how to make a living out of their beauty or prettiness. It is amazing how girls impress men, they only sacrifice non-valuable things which men think that they are so worth it, like saving a few rand to buy just one attire or outfit for that particular event. It really does not take much for ladies to impress men.
It is every man’s wish to have a beautiful girlfriend by his side, but in nowadays that does not come cheap because you must be driving a luxury car and wearing expensive clothes.
Some men could even abandon their families because of the so-called divas; take for instance Khanyi Mbau and Theunis Crous. Theunis almost got divorced when his wife discovered that he had an affair with Khanyi. That is so ridiculous because if khanyi had good morals she would not have pushed the guy that far, because apparently she is the one who made a first move to this guy. Most people regard her as a celebrity, she is rich of cause, she is a role model to the young ladies, but no one knows what she does for a living (professional wise). It is certainly not justifiable when someone has got so much wealth without having any qualifications, but no questions asked because everyone knows what she is capable of doing.
No offence to the ladies but most of them thinks that being pretty in a hot dress will enhance them to live a better life. Well, most people would certainly agree because men in nowadays are so naive. They are only concerned about what is underneath that hot dress without actually considering the person’s values and morals, hence the divorce rate is so high.
Does khanyi have kids? If she does, what is she teaching them, to also become blings like her when they grow old? What institution did she go to? I am just curious...

PROTEAS ARE MAKING SOUTH AFRICANS PROUD

South African national Cricket team “Proteas” are showing victory in their World cup games. Proteas played only four games and they won 3 games. The ICC cricket world cup 2011 is hosted in three countries, Bangladesh, India, and Sri Lanka. Fourteen national cricket teams are competing in the tournament.
Proteas are trying their best to retain the South African dignity after Bafana Bafana were hosting the soccer World cup last year and did not make it to the quarterfinals. Meanwhile Springbok on their side has made the South Africans happy by winning the World cup in 2007. Proteas played well so far as they are through to the quarterfinals of the ICC Cricket World cup. Proteas defeated Netherlands in their first game which led them to play against England. England did not shown any mercy to Proteas as they defeated them by six runs, but Proteas did not gave up on that because they won against the hosts India on Saturday. Many people did not believe the defeat of India by Proteas, because the Indians played in a very confident manner as they were the ones who won the toss and chose to bat first. South African boilers did a very good job after the tenth over as the Indians were hitting fours and Sixes, but Steyn managed to stop the Indian fire as he got 5 wickets on his name.
South African batmen also did a good job, but Proteas supporters are talking about Greame Smith the Captain of Proteas. Supporters are blaming Smith of not playing like a leader they say he is so lazy, he blocks the balls that are not supposed to be blocked.
Now Proteas are waiting to play against Bangladesh on Saturday after they defeated Ireland by 131 runs on Tuesday. Proteas are the first team to go through to the quarterfinals in group B and now are currently sitting on top of the group.

WHO WILL BE THE PSL CHAMPS?

The Absa Premiership League is coming to an end and everyone in South Africa is asking who will be the 2010 and 2011 PSL champions. All the teams played 24 games, but the most shocking thing is that the 3 time PSL league champions SuperSport United is so miserably, Madzantsantsa are still struggling to get into the top 8 of the league. Two weeks ago SuperSport United was defeated by Bloemfontein Celtics 5-0 in Seisa Ramapudu Stadium; people are asking what went wrong to Gorvan Hunt because he seems to be confused. SuperSport United supporters are blaming the management; they say they release good quality players, the likes of Teko Modise, Dan Klat and others. SuperSport is not showing any improvement even though they have the former number one South African goal keeper Rowen Fernandez.
Mamelodi Sundowns seemed to be the one who is going to be the Champs, Sundowns has good quality players, the only problem they have is the management. Sundowns were on top of the league for nearly two months, but they dropped to the fourth position and they decided to fire the coach and bring the new one for the third time in one season. After they bought a new Coach at least things are going better now as Katlego Mphela is also back on the squad after he was suffering from an injury.
On the other hand Soweto giants Orlando Pirates who are on the top of the League and Kaizer Chiefs who are on the fourth position following Mamelodi Sundowns are fighting to take the league after it has been so long. These two Soweto giants are so stressed after they played a 1-1 draw on the 26th of February at FNB stadium. These two teams had played draws in their last three games and their supporters are disappointed by their performances as they were promising after the Christmas break. Meanwhile Ajax Cape town is playing so good and it looks like they are going to take the league after they played 24 games and win 15 games with 4 draws and 5 loses, now they are standing on the second position of the log following after Orlando Pirates.
Moroka Swallows is standing on the 15th position; the Dube Birds seem to be confused as they are praying for miracles to not be relegated. Soweto football supporters are worried about their old big team. Mpulanga Blacks Aces has no place on PSL as it is quite clear that they are going where they from in Mvela Golden League. In Cape Town new team in PSL Vasco Da Gama is doing exceptional well, it shows that they were looking to take the league as they are on the 13th position of the log and they are playing to reach the top 8.
